What is Métisse Magazine?
This online magazine is a forum for young multicultural, multiracial women. It provides them with a Web site to communicate about issues of importance to them. It touches on questions of racial identity that matter in our 21st century global society as well as the racial reality that exists in America and in other multicultural countries.
What is the focus of this online magazine?
The magazine focuses on education, facts, and fun. The goal is to provide readers with information and news about this growing population worldwide. Our content shows the strength and creativity that diversity brings to the world. It is also our goal to highlight significant female performers and celebrities who have identified themselves as métisse women. The online magazine will be built around viewer-created content. It is what métisse women do, feel, say, and think that is important to the site.
What does the name Métisse mean?
Métisse is a French adjective used to describe a woman who is multicultural or multiracial. We don’t have such a word in English. It is a fact of psycholinguistics that if we do not have a word for something, we cannot hold the idea or concept in our minds. Therefore, women with diverse ancestry are often not properly identified. The English language may not have a word which isn’t pejorative or offensive to some groups. “Métisse” is just one additional word that these young women can use to identify themselves.
Why do they need their own Web site and/or magazine?
Primarily because everyone needs an opportunity to tell their own story. For us, this is best done by young Métisse women. They will have a chance to identify themselves as an untapped resource. These young women are beyond stereotypes, and because of their ethnic backgrounds and cultural awareness, they are unique examples and role models. They are the future, and they are being ignored.
Where are these women now?
They can be seen everywhere, but they are slighted by the mainstream media. They appear in magazine ads, catalogs, television commercials and other areas of the media. However, businesses tend to market with them and not to them. In this way, the essence of their unique identity is ignored. Our online magazine plans to build a network to allow them to be interconnected and provide them with a platform for expressing their views.
